Admission Requirements into Political Science
- JAMB UTME Entry (100-Level):
This is for students who wrote JAMB, the standard entry mode for students with the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), National Examination Council (NECO), or their equivalents.
Candidates for admission into the Department of Political Science must have obtained a credit pass in
- English Language,
- Government or History,
- one science subject,
- credit pass in any of the following: Economics, Geography, Christian Religious Studies, Civic Education, Literature-in-English and Commerce in not more than two sittings.
- Direct Entry:
Candidates for direct entry shall possess either of the following:
- Five Credit Passes in SSCE, NECO, GCE or their equivalent in English Language, Mathematics, one science subject, and any of the following: Government or History, Economics, Geography, Christian Religious Studies, Civic Education, Literature-in-English and Commerce, of which at least two from the list must be at the advanced level; or four credit passes from the list, of which at least three shall be at advanced level.
- At least Merit Pass in Diploma or National Certificate of Education (NCE) in relevant courses.
- At least lower credit in National Diploma in relevant courses.
- All categories of direct entry candidates start from Year One.
JAMB Subject Combination For Political Science
For the UTME exams, you’ll need to select the following subjects:
- English Language
- Government
- History,
- Any other social science subject like Geography, English Literature, French and C R k.

JAMB Cut-Off Mark for Political Science:
Jamb cut- off mark typically range between 160 – 200.
However, for competitive courses like Political Science, achieving the minimum cut-off may not guarantee admission.
In most cases, a significantly higher score (often exceeding 250) is necessary to be considered for the next stage.
Political Science Post utme
If you meet the JAMB UTME requirements and score competitively, you’ll be invited to participate in the Post-UTME Screening Exercise of the university you choose.
This is an additional selection process conducted by the university to assess your suitability for their programs. Here’s what to expect:

Screening Test:
The post-UTME test typically focuses on the same subject combination taken in JAMB UTME: English Language, Political Science, Mathematics, and another relevant social science subject.

Screening Cut-Off Mark:
It depends on the university you choose, because cut- off marks varies. However, the cut- off mark of Political Science is 180+.
Scoring well (often exceeding the JAMB UTME score) is crucial to increase your chances of securing a place in the program.
