JAMB Abolishes Cut-Off Mark (No Cut-Off Mark)

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) issued a statement on its official platform on Thursday. The statement addressed recent reports concerning standardized cut-off marks for admission into Nigerian universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.

JAMB emphasized that it does not have any special cut-off mark for admissions. Instead, each tertiary institution has the authority to determine its own “minimum tolerable score” for admission purposes.

“There’s no such thing as ‘cut-off mark’ in the admission process to tertiary institutions in Nigeria, what’s obtainable is minimum tolerable score determinable by individual institutions,” it said.

This clarification comes after widespread reports claimed JAMB had established cut-off marks of 140 for universities and 100 for polytechnics and colleges. The statement highlights the distinction between JAMB’s role in conducting entrance exams and the individual institutions’ responsibility for setting admissions criteria.

The JAMB statement follows a policy meeting held in Abuja on Wednesday. The meeting involved key figures in Nigerian education, including the Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman, vice-chancellors, rectors, registrars, and other stakeholders. While details of the meeting’s discussions haven’t been publicly disclosed, the statement clarifies its position regarding cut-off marks for admissions.

Understanding the admissions process is crucial for prospective students in Nigeria. While JAMB conducts standardized entrance exams, individual universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education hold the authority to establish their own minimum score requirements for admission. This means that students should research the specific requirements of their desired institutions in addition to taking the UTME entrance exam.

JAMB Announces New Minimum Age Requirement for Nigerian Universities

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) clarified information about admission requirements for colleges and universities in Nigeria.

At the policy meeting, which was held on Thursday 18th July 2025, in Abuja, Nigeria, the minister of Education, Tahir Mamman made a decision that admission should not be given to candidates under the age of 18.

The recent announcement by the Minister of Education regarding the minimum age for admission into tertiary institutions in Nigeria has sparked a conversation among educators and parents. While some agree with the policy, others have expressed conerns.

According to him, the 18-year benchmark is linked to with the structure of the 6-3-3-4 system of education.

“JAMB is hereby instructed from admission this year to admit only eligible students. That is those who have attained 18 years by our laws,” He stated.

The Minister explained that current Nigerian law sets out a specific timeframe for primary, secondary, and tertiary education. This structure is designed for students to reach 18 years old by the time they complete secondary school and potentially qualify for university admission.”

This clarifies the Minister’s argument that the 18-year minimum age is already established by law.

“Our laws require students to be in school from six years – Yes, there are those who do that from five –  and remain in primary school for six years, basic education for three years, and secondary school for three years… It doesn’t require a statement of the minister… we are only restating what is in the law,” he added.

Professor Mamman also mentioned the Ministry of Education’s efforts to offer a wider range of educational programs. This includes providing opportunities to develop practical skills starting in primary school.”

The 2024 policy meeting about admissions for higher education in Nigeria included a discussion about the minimum age for starting university. There were different ideas presented by the stakeholders, and after considering all the input, a final decision was made about the admission age.”

Some participants at the meeting expressed concern that students who had already taken the admissions test might be affected by a new age requirement.”

Professor Kayode Ijiadunola countered the minister’s proposal at a policy meeting. He suggested 16 as the minimum age for admission, and his idea resonated with many participants, including heads of institutions, registrars, and admissions officers.

“What happens to those who have written this year’s exams and passed their exams? We reject 18 years as the minimum age requirement and are proposing 16 years,” he said.

In Summary, this year (2024), 16-year-olds who applied to tertiary institutions can still be admitted, but Starting next year (2025), the minimum age to enter these schools will be 18.

Nigeria Cracks Down on Unaccredited Universities

The National Universities Commission (NUC) of Nigeria has taken a significant step to ensure the quality of higher education in the country. They recently released a list of 58 institutions that are operating illegally and do not have the proper accreditation to award recognized degrees.

This crackdown follows the Nigerian government’s decision to suspend the accreditation of degrees from certain universities in neighboring countries. The NUC is committed to protecting students from wasting time and money on programs that won’t be accepted for official purposes such as employment or further education.

What are “Degree Mills”?

The NUC has identified these institutions as “degree mills.” This term refers to universities that lack proper authorization and offer degrees that hold no value. Attending a degree mill can have serious consequences for students, including:

  • Wasted time and money: Students may invest significant resources in tuition fees and living expenses, only to find their degrees are worthless.
  • Limited job opportunities: Employers typically require degrees from accredited institutions as a minimum qualification.
  • Difficulties with further studies: Unrecognized degrees may not be accepted for postgraduate programs in Nigeria or abroad.

The NUC’s Role

The NUC plays a vital role in regulating higher education in Nigeria. They are responsible for:

  • Setting standards for universities
  • Granting accreditation to qualified institutions
  • Ensuring quality control in educational programs

The NUC encourages students and parents to be cautious when choosing a university. They advise verifying an institution’s accreditation status through the NUC’s official website before enrolling.

Finding a Reputable University

For students seeking legitimate higher education in Nigeria, here are some resources:

  • National Universities Commission (NUC) website: The NUC website provides a comprehensive list of accredited universities in Nigeria. You can search by program, location, or institution type.
  • Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) website: JAMB is responsible for conducting university entrance examinations in Nigeria. Their website offers valuable information on the admissions process and accredited universities.

By utilizing these resources, students can make informed decisions about their educational pursuits and ensure they receive recognized qualifications that will enhance their future prospects.

The NUC has also identified eight additional universities that are under investigation. These institutions may face legal repercussions if they are found to be operating without proper accreditation.

Top 10 Most Competitive Courses in Nigerian Universities

Choosing a university course in Nigeria is a pivotal decision shaping one’s career trajectory. While numerous academic programs are available, specific fields have consistently attracted a disproportionate number of applicants, making admission highly competitive. This article ranks the top 10 most sought-after and challenging courses to gain entry into Nigerian universities.

1. Medicine and Surgery

Undeniably the most competitive course, Medicine and Surgery attracts top students due to the profession’s prestige and vital role in society. Limited medical schools and rigorous academic standards create a highly selective admission process.

2. Law

The allure of a successful legal career drives intense competition for law programs. Universities with renowned law faculties receive overwhelming applications, demanding exceptional academic records and critical thinking skills from applicants.

3. Pharmacy

The growing healthcare sector and limited pharmacy programs intensify competition for this course. Aspiring pharmacists must demonstrate a strong academic foundation and passion for the field to secure admission.

4. Dentistry and Dental Surgery

Similar to Medicine and Surgery, Dentistry and Dental Surgery programs are highly competitive due to limited slots and a high demand for dental professionals.

5. Engineering (All Disciplines)

The nation’s infrastructural development fuels demand for engineers, making programs like Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, and Petroleum Engineering highly competitive. Strong mathematical and scientific abilities are essential for admission.

6. Computer Science

The digital age has surged demand for Computer Science graduates. Limited program availability and the allure of lucrative tech careers contribute to intense competition.

7. Biochemistry

Biochemistry’s relevance to medical and pharmaceutical fields attracts many applicants. Its interdisciplinary nature and limited program offerings make it highly competitive.

8. Accounting and Finance

The stability and career prospects in accounting and finance make these courses popular. The demand for skilled accountants and financial analysts creates a competitive admission landscape.

9. Nursing

The growing healthcare sector and diverse career opportunities in nursing contribute to its popularity. Limited nursing programs and a high demand for nurses make admission challenging.

10. Mass Communication

The media industry’s growth and potential for exciting careers attract students to mass communication. However, limited slots in top institutions create competition for aspiring media professionals.

Factors Influencing Competition

Several factors contribute to the competitiveness of these courses:

  1. Perceived lucrative careers: These fields promise high earning potential and social status.
  2. Limited program availability: A shortage of programs in some universities exacerbates competition.
  3. Increasing number of applicants: The growing population of university aspirants intensifies competition for popular courses.

Conclusion

Gaining admission to these top 10 competitive courses requires exceptional academic performance, dedication, and strategic planning. Students should explore alternative options or institutions if their preferred choice proves unattainable. While the journey is challenging, the rewards of succeeding in these fields are significant.

JAMB Sets the Stage for 2024/2025 Admissions

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has officially announced that Thursday, July 18, 2024, will be the date for its crucial Policy Meeting on Admissions into tertiary institutions across Nigeria. This annual gathering, to be presided over by the Honorable Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Mamman, is a pivotal event that shapes the educational landscape of the country.

A host of key stakeholders will converge for this significant meeting. Representatives from regulatory bodies such as the National University Commission (NUC), National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), and the National Council for Colleges of Education (NCCE) will be in attendance. Additionally, heads of tertiary institutions nationwide and officials from the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) will contribute their expertise to the discussions.

The policy meeting serves as a cornerstone for the entire admission process, laying the groundwork for the upcoming academic year. It’s a platform where admission guidelines are meticulously crafted, application statistics are analyzed, and candidates’ performance is rigorously evaluated. One of the most critical outcomes of this meeting is the determination of the minimum acceptable admission standards for all tertiary institutions across Nigeria.

A key focus of the meeting will be the presentation of comprehensive reports by the JAMB Registrar. These reports will delve into the recently concluded Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and provide an update on the ongoing Direct Entry (DE) applications. Furthermore, the Registrar will dissect crucial performance indicators that will influence the government’s policy directions in the realm of admissions.

To ensure a smooth and transparent process, the meeting will also address lingering issues from the previous year’s admission exercise. Stakeholders will have the opportunity to discuss challenges faced and propose solutions to prevent their recurrence. Moreover, a thorough evaluation of candidates’ performance in the current year’s UTME will be undertaken to establish the minimum admissible score for securing a place in tertiary institutions.

It’s worth noting that the previous year’s policy meeting resulted in a consensus on minimum admission requirements for universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education. Building upon this foundation, the upcoming meeting will solidify the admission criteria for the current year, officially commencing the admission process.

Beyond setting admission benchmarks, the policy meeting will serve as a forum for addressing unresolved matters from the preceding academic year. Additionally, stakeholders will assess compliance with existing advisories and explore potential amendments to enhance the overall admission process.

As the nation eagerly awaits the outcome of this pivotal meeting, JAMB has pledged to provide regular updates on the proceedings. The decisions made during this gathering will undoubtedly have a profound impact on the educational aspirations of countless young Nigerians.

The policy meeting is more than just a bureaucratic exercise; it’s a platform where the future of higher education is shaped. The deliberations and decisions made will determine the opportunities available to aspiring students and, consequently, the trajectory of Nigeria’s intellectual and economic growth.

With the stakes high and expectations running strong, all eyes will be on the Honorable Minister of Education and the assembled stakeholders as they work diligently to create a robust and equitable admissions framework for the nation’s youth.
